** A full schedule for the semester will be posted on Canvas once it is available. **
** Note: ALL relevant course materials will be posted on Canvas. This website shall host only the initial Welcome Message and general Syllabus. **
You will need to access a few materials for CHEM 211 Lectures and Workshops this semester, and they include:
Internet Access for Canvas and email communications. Check to make sure your Canvas account settings correctly lists your email address. All course materials will be hosted on Canvas.
Textbook: Organic Chemistry (Klein, 4th ed.) and its Student Solutions Guide is sold at LAPC Bookstore. You may use previous editions, which may be available at a lower cost. There may be differences between content and chapter organization, and you are welcome to contact me to ensure that you are learning the correct content.
Supplemental (Optional) Materials:
Chemistry 211 Course Guide: Dr. Meyer-Joiner's course guide (free) may be used as a study aid for CHEM 211.
Official ACS Organic Chemistry Study Guide (for the final exam)
You will also need a variety of materials for CHEM 211 Labs this semester, and they include:
Flame Resistant Lab Coat for all wet chemistry labs. These must be 100% cotton, long sleeve, and knee-length. Polyester lab coats are prohibited from lab; do not buy the lab coat in the student store, since that is flammable and not safe for labs.
Lab Instructions: Lab instructions will be provided free of charge on Canvas.
Lab Notebook: A 100-page duplicate-sheet Chemistry (bound) laboratory notebook is required for all labs. You may use unfinished notebooks from previous semesters. All lab data must be recorded in your lab notebook unless otherwise instructed.
Spartan Software: Spartan is available for student use on Chemistry Department computers.
Other Personal Protective Equipment: Your safety is our safety, and we as a class will take safety seriously so that everyone is safe. This includes:
safety goggles that fit snugly around your eyes. Eye protection during each lab experiment is required by state law and must be worn at all times.
shoes that enclose your entire foot including every toes and the whole ankle
tops that cover the entire torso and shoulders which means no exposed midriffs or shoulders
bottoms that run down to the knees which means no exposed thighs
a conscious attention that clearly follows procedures. For everyone's safety, no phones or electronics may be used indoors while experiments are in session.
Consistently reading the textbook and completing the Course Guide prior to lectures will provide you a greater understanding of all worksheets, activities, and self-assessment questions in the textbook.
Study efficiently since more is not always better. Focus on quality over quantity, and read through the learning objectives in each PowerPoint. You will be well prepared for exams if you can effortlessly answer all questions from workshops and previous exams.
Form study groups. You benefit when you explain a concept to another student, and another student benefits when they do the same for you.
